Tara Conner Writing Rehab Book

Tara Conner now has a year of sobriety under her belt, so last year’s Miss USA is moving onto the next step, which is to write a book about her rehab experience. If you’ll remember, Donald Trump was gracious enough to give Tara Conner a second chance before he terminated her from her crown.

Going into a succeeding in drug and alcohol rehab center was required by the Donald for this forgiveness to fully take place. Now, Tara Conner, who turned 22-years-old on December 13 is writing a memoir about her experiences at the Caron Foundation rehab center including kicking the cocaine habit.

Parents Arrested as 3 Toddlers Tested Positive for Meth

In Florence, Texas 45 miles from Austin, the parents of three toddlers were arrested when the children tested positive for methamphetamines. The children, ages 1, 2 and 3 of Michael Joseph Denson and Melody Lorraine Whatley were taken into custody by the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services.

This is not the first incident in which the couple’s kids have tested positive for drugs as two of the couple’s children tested positive for marijuana at birth. The parents were arrested under a new law making them criminally responsible for their children testing positive for drugs.

President Bush Talks Openly About Past Alcohol Addiction

In an interview with ABC News, President Bush talked openly about his past alcohol addiction. According to President Bush, “I doubt I’d be standing here if I hadn’t quit drinking whiskey, and beer and wine and all that.”

He went on to say, “Alcohol can compete with your affections. It sure did in my case, affections with your family, or affections for exercise.” Bush stated that he gave up drinking after a night on the town celebrating his 40th birthday in 1986.

President Bush opened up about his past alcohol abuse in order to encourage teens at the White House who had come for an event to help stop drug and alcohol addiction in their communities.

Beautiful Boy Addiction Book Offered by Starbucks?

Yes, it’s true. The place promoting caffeine addiction to millions of coffee hounds is promoting a book about meth addiction. Starbucks has decided to put on its shelves next year Beautiful Boy: A Father’s Journey through His Son’s Addiction.

The memoir was written by David Sheff and is a compelling true story written about the relationship of the author with his son who was addicted to methamphetamines and the struggle for recovery. Sheff has written three other books about technology and celebrities, so Beautiful Boy is a personal departure for him.

Sheff’s memoir comes from a different viewpoint that many other personal books about drug addiction in that it comes from the perspective of a parent struggling with feelings of powerlessness and helplessness over a child’s addiction.

ABC’s Series Coming Home: Soldiers and Drugs

ABC News has a new series called “Coming Home: Soldiers and Drugs” that is worth checking out. ABC reporters have interviewed dozens of solders at Fort Carson, Colorado about issues of drug use and dependency.

The article follows several individuals who were under battle stress in Iraq, Afghanistan and Kuwait and turned to drugs for relief. The military’s response has varied from treatment to jail time to dishonorable discharges.

The U. S. Army has denied that soldiers coming home from battle are facing drug problems in increasing numbers. Hospitals and drug counseling centers near Fort Carson are saying different as they have seen dramatic increases of soldiers seeking help.

21-Percent of Ontario Students Take Non-Prescribed Painkillers

According to a recent study, 21-percent of students in Ontario, Canada take painkillers without a prescription. Of this amount, 72-percent say that they get the painkillers from their parents.

The Ontario Student Drug Use and Health Survey was given to over 6,000 kids and teens grades 7 – 12. Also significant are the findings that Oxycontin use has jumped from 1 to 2-percent in just 2 years.

In addition, the Internet has added to the non-prescribed drug problem as teens are blogging about what drugs to take for stress, menstrual cramps or sports injuries. Alcohol and marijuana still lead the list of the most abused drugs however, coming in at 61-percent and 26-percent respectively.

San Francisco Police Arrest 104 Drug Dealers

Police in San Francisco have arrested 104 drug dealers and others in the second large-scale drug bust in a month. Over 100 police officers were involved in the buying of methamphetamine, heroin and cocaine plus other drugs primarily from the Tenderloin district.

The San Francisco Police Gang Task Force and Narcotics Division were involved plus officers from visiting departments in making the arrests. The Tenderloin district was targeted because of rampant drug use and violence. In October, 103 drug dealers were nabbed in the Mission district and Market Street areas and these two areas were also targets for the current drug bust as well.

Meth Madness and New Laws

This week, two stories about meth popped up that cannot be ignored. First, three Nigerian men in Japan checked into an emergency room for severe abdominal pains. One of the men had a half a kilo of methamphetamines in his stomach in pouches, which ruptured, killing him. The pouches had been too large to pass through the man’s intestines and ended up leaking and leading to an overdose.

Second, in Illinois a new law has been enacted to try to take a bite out of meth use. The law makes it a Class 4 felony to transport, steal or store anhydrous ammonia used to make methamphetamines. Those who cook meth may face a $25,000 fine and three years in jail. Two years ago, Illinois enacted another anti-meth law, requiring people to sign for pseudoephedrine products and have seen positive results from this law going into effect.

Mexican Police Seize 11 Tons of Cocaine

In what is being billed as one of the biggest drug busts ever, Mexican police and customs agents have seized over 11 tons of cocaine. The bust was made from the Manzanillo port aboard a ship coming from Colombia. The haul is so large that officials are still counting the packets that number over 10,000.

According to Mexican officials there have been over 2,000 people killed this year involving the government and rival drug gangs. President Felipe Calderon has been outspoken in regards to Mexico’s commitment towards fighting drug trafficking. The U. S. has proposed aiding Mexico with $1.4 billion in order to fight drug trafficking.

Red Ribbon Week Calls Awareness to Addiction

It’s Red Ribbon Week once again in the U. S. and time to call awareness to the issues surrounding drug and alcohol addiction. The National Family Partnership, who coordinates Red Ribbon Week says that more than 80 million people participate in drug and alcohol prevention commitments during this week, particularly students.

Students this week are encouraged to pledge to live drug and alcohol free lives, while wearing red ribbons and other red clothing. Red Ribbon Week honors DEA agent Enrique Camarena (Kiki) who was captured and killed by drug traffickers in Mexico City in 1985.

Red Ribbon Week is the oldest and largest drug and alcohol prevention campaign in the U. S. and is a method of showing a visible commitment to a drug-free America.
