Celebrity Addicts in Rehab an Epidemic of Late
Britney, Anna Nicole,
Mel Gibson - it seems like you can't swing a dead cat now days without
hitting a celebrity addict who has been in rehab. The benefit of
this kind of publicity is that it normalizes drug and alcohol rehab
for everybody else.
| The downside, however,
is that people entering rehab may have unrealistic expectations
regarding the recovery process and especially how long recovery
from addiction takes. When celebrities use rehab as a revolving
door to revitalize their careers, this sends a message that
rehab is not that serious.
Also, the motives of some celebrities have been called into
question as to why they are going into rehab in the first
place. Are these celebrity addicts ones who need to be in
rehab for substance abuse issues or is a publicity stunt and
career move?

It seems almost fashionable now for celebrities to get a tattoo,
shave their heads, go into rehab for a couple days and declare themselves
"cured" and then they are onto their next project. Over
the past few months, this website has reported on rehab for Pete
Doherty, Keith Urban,
Lindsay Lohan, Whitney
Houston, Tara Conner
and Mike Tyson.
There is no doubt that these celebrities have needed to be in rehab
for serious substance abuse issues. For others, however, the question
remains to be seen whether drug and alcohol rehab is given the respect
it deserves or is being used for other gainful and unseemly purposes.
There is also a whole list of other famous
addicts that have been in rehab before we started reporting
on such issues that is worth checking out to see how commonplace
this occurrence has become.
