Medical Marijuana Dispensaries to be Banned in
Livermore, CA
City officials in Livermore, California (near Oakland) are moving
to ban medical marijuana dispensaries. Counsel members are drafting
the ordinance because of the belief that medical marijuana dispensaries
draw crime and the disparities between state and federal laws.
| California in 1996 approved
Proposition 215 in favor of allowing the dispensing of marijuana
for medical purposes. However, the federal government still
regards marijuana as an illegal substance.
In June 2005, the U. S. Supreme Court voted 6 - 3 to strike
down the production and possession of medical marijuana. In
an unanticipated move, California Attorney General Bill Lockyer
struck down the Supreme Court's ruling.

An informal survey of drug users in California's court mandated
drug aversion programs for those who were caught for DUI or possession
charges indicate that doctors need to be on the lookout for addicts
spoofing symptoms in order to gain medical marijuana cards. Addicts
have reported faking symptoms such as migraine headaches and other
pain-related conditions in order to obtain the cards.
